Fellow
Applicants for Fellow status must be graduates from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), an accredited school of osteopathy or an equivalent foreign medical institution, be fully licensed to practice medicine, be certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI), a conjoint board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics, and exhibit superior proficiency in research or in the practice of allergy-immunology as demonstrated by (a) teaching in a recognized medical school or affiliated hospital, for a period of not less than two years immediately preceding application, or (b) devoting at least 75 percent of his or her professional activity to the practice of allergy-immunology for a period of not less than two years immediately preceding application.
This application requires three letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s high moral, ethical, and professional standing from physicians familiar with the applicant, at least one of whom is a current Fellow of the College, along with a small application fee.
Member
To quality as a Member, an applicant must be a graduate from a medical school accredited by the LCME, an accredited school of osteopathy or an equivalent foreign medical institution, be fully licensed to practice medicine, an satisfy the requirements of eligibility for examination by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology at the time of application for membership to the ACAAI; or be a physician who has completed at least two years in an accredited U.S. allergy/immunology training program and has a certificate of completion but is not eligible to take the boards in allergy/immunology because of a lack of board certification in either pediatrics or internal medicine.
This application requires three letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s high moral, ethical, and professional standing from physicians familiar with the applicant, at least one of whom is a current Fellow or Member of the College, along with a small application fee.
Scientific Fellow
To quality as a Scientific Fellow, an applicant shall be a scientist who has made meritorious contributions to the field of allergy/immunology and shall be of high moral, ethical and professional standing as attested to by three physicians familiar with the applicant, at least one of whom is a Fellow of the College, along with a small application fee.
Emeritus Fellow and Emeritus Member
This category describes a Fellow or Member, respectively, who has been in good standing for at least 15 years, and has reached the age of 70. Please contact the ACAAI office for further information.
Retired Fellow & Retired Member
This category describes a Fellow or Member, respectively, who has been in good standing and who has retired completely from the compensated practice of medicine. Please contact the ACAAI office for further information.
Honorary Fellow
Honorary fellowship status is bestowed upon a physician or scientist who has made an exceptional contribution to the field of allergy/immunology. All physician and scientist categories of the College are eligible in the consideration of this honor.
Fellow-in-Training Member
To qualify as a Fellow-in-Training Member, an applicant shall be a physician enrolled in an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education-approved allergy-immunology training program and receive the recommendation of one ACAAI Fellow or Member, or the allergy training program director. Application fees and dues are waived for Fellow-in-Training Members.
Inactive Fellow and Inactive Member
This category describes a Fellow or Member, respectively, who cannot continue his or her medical practice due to health or personal problems, or has extenuating financial circumstances. Please contact the ACAAI office for further information.
Associate Member
An Associate Member applicant shall be a registered nurse (R.N.), nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist or certified physician's assistant (P.A.) engaged in practice of allergy/immunology, and requires sponsorship by an ACAAI Fellow or Member.
Allied Member
An Allied Member applicant shall be a physician in a related field, a licensed practical nurse or other non-physician engaged in a technical or administrative position in allergy/immunology, and requires sponsorship by an ACAAI Fellow or Member. International Affiliate Member
An International Affiliate Member must reside outside the U.S. or Canada, be a medical school graduate, practice medicine in the country of residence, and have completed training in allergy/immunology as well as exhibiting an interest in this specialized practice of medicine.
Alliance Member
ACAAI Alliance membership is open to all spouses and partners of College Fellows and Members. The Alliance provides a hospitality suite, educational and entertaining programs, and tour information about each convention city to its members and their families at the annual College meeting. Membership provides many networking opportunities, including an annual business-meeting luncheon, and promotes friendships with a diverse group of people.
In addition, the Alliance contributes to the progress and growth of the specialty of allergy and immunology with travel awards to fellows-in-training to attend the annual meeting and present their research. One of the highlights each year is the presentation of the Von Pirquet awards to fellows-in-training who demonstrated excellence in research. This distinction includes monetary awards supported entirely by the Alliance.
